Former NFL Player Clinton Portis Declares Bankruptcy, Owes His Mom $500K
Former Redskins running back, Clinton Portis, was once worth $25 million after spending nine seasons playing in the NFL. However, all that has changed, as he has officially declared bankruptcy last month. According to a federal bankruptcy filing that was issued this week, Portis is $5 million in debt. What's even more shocking is that of this $5 million debt, he owes $500,000 of it to his own mother.
Rhonnel Hearn, Portis' mother, is listed as the second highest creditor on the claim, along with ET correspondent/former NFL sideline reporter Nischelle Turner, to whom he also owes $500,000. According to the Gainesville Sun, the money he owes to his mom is in connection with a house he built for her in Florida that was about to get foreclosed on. Additionally, Portis owes money on his mortgage, to the IRS, the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Vegas, to four different women for child support, for car payments, and for unpaid phone bills.
Portis retired from the NFL in 2012 (though he hasn't played a game since his 2010 season) and since then, he has been working as a freelance sideline reporter while also receiving disability money from the NFL. Even though he is still getting a steady paycheck, it is not nearly enough to let him continue living the lavish lifestyle that he once was accustomed to when he was in the NFL. After retirement, he quickly learned the consequences of living above his means the hard way. As of today, Portis is listed as having only $150 in his checking account.
