Gods Of Egypt Bombs At The Box Office
Lionsgate 'Gods of Egypt' has been met with much criticism over the fact that a movie based in Egypt starred absolutely no people of African descent. Could that be why the film is only slated to bring in $11 million to $13 million in its opening weekend, after only bringing just under $5 million on its first day? Considering that this is also Oscar weekend and #OscarsSoWhite remains a trending topic, one can say that the film bombing in the box office is sheer irony.
Gods of Egypt had a $140 million production budget and is already being considered the first big-budget miss of the year. 'Deadpool' remains number one for its third consecutive week, reaching nearly $300 million domestically. That doesn't include how much it's set to make overseas. Even Quentin Tarantino's 'The Hateful Eight' nears the $150 million mark worldwide.
Gods of Egypt hopes to make up its losses overseas. It rolls out in 68 markets this weekend, and on March 11 lands in China. do you think it can bring in $100 million overseas alone? I'm highly doubting it.
Have you seen the film? Lack of proper representation aside, what are your thoughts?
