The idea of small locking stowage compartments in cars isn’t new; most cars back in the day had lockable glove boxes. But thanks to the ugly keyhole jutting out of the compartments, and mostly because of improved car safety systems, carmakers have done away with them. However, Bentley believes that its users carry valuable items on them that need a safe place to store inside their cars. The British luxury automaker has introduced a new keyless hideaway storage compartment for the Bentayga SUV protected by a biometric security system. The new feature has been developed by Bentley’s commissioning division Mulliner and needs uses a fingerprint scanner for the access to the box.
Called the Mulliner Biometric Secure Stowage unit, the state-of-the-art storage locker is located underneath the armrest between the driver and passenger. The Mulliner-branded fingerprint sensor can be programmed to read several different fingerprint profiles. “We are incorporating the familiar capacitive fingerprint sensor technology from smartphones that can store multiple fingerprints, allowing the user to control who accesses their valuables,” said Uday Senapati, head of technical operations at Mulliner. The die-cast aluminum container also contains an auxiliary jack and two USB ports. Bentley did not provide details on pricing or the exact dimensions of the new feature, but has confirmed at it’s not an option restricted to just Bentaygas customized by Mulliner division.
