Beyonce Makes History, Surpasses Madonna With Most Moonmen Awards

History in the making. Beyoncé took home eight Moonmen at the MTV VMAs on Sunday, August 28, making her the artist with the most VMAs ever. Queen Bey now has a reigning total of 25 Moonmen, while Madonna, the previous queen of the VMAs, has 20.

Beyoncé, 34, won six of her awards for her controversial song “Formation” — Best Pop Video, Best Direction, Best Choreography, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and the coveted Video of the Year.

Her two other VMAs were for Best Female Video (“Hold Up”) and Best Long-Form Video (“Beyonce: Lemonade”). The iconic songstress dedicated her Video of the Year win to “the people of New Orleans.”

Earlier in the night, she blew the audience away with a rousing performance of hits off her Lemonade album, including “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and “Formation.”

The singer even literally dropped the mic after giving the jaw-dropping performance (Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were hilariously nonplussed while sitting backstage in preparation for her introduction of Britney Spears after Beyoncé’s performance. The couple sat without speaking, scrolling through their phones.)

Madonna formerly ruled the stage at the MTV VMAs, perhaps most memorably at the 1984 awards show, with her first-ever performance in full bridal gear of “Like a Virgin.”

In subsequent years, the now-58-year-old music icon also performed her 1990 hit “Vogue” and lip-locked with Britney Spears in 2003.

During his time on stage Sunday, West referenced his headline-making 2009 outburst by telling the audience, “Now, later tonight, ‘Famous’ might lose to Beyoncé, but I can’t be mad. I’m always wishing for Beyoncé to win.”
