Tropical Bird Repeater by Jaquet Droz
Swiss luxury watch brand Jaquet Droz with a storied history spanning over almost three centuries is renowned from making exceptional automaton watches. Their newest creation of mechanical artistry is inspired by a tropical landscape and celebrates the Enlightenment-era passion for nature and animals of brand founder and namesake Pierre Jaquet-Droz. Meet the Jaquet Droz Tropical Bird Repeater, a beautiful handcrafted watch that joins the Mainson’s line of automaton timepieces first introduced in 2012. The dial is made of mother of pearl, hand-engraved and painted to depict boomingly exotic tropical flora and fauna from a lush forest scene. In the center is a hummingbird which moves towards the shrub of bright orange birds of paradise near 9 o’clock and beats its wings up to 40 times per second.
On activation of the automatons mechanism by the wearer, the hummingbird beats its wings, the peacock to the right fans and closes its tail, and a toucan emerges from the palm leaves at 3 o’clock to open its beak. Three dragonflies near 9 o’clock flit around and flap tiny Super-Luminova coated wings, which would look very attractive in dark. In total, seven different animations can be played that may exceed twelve seconds and allow for up to 4 different scenarios The case is 47mm-wide by 18.95mm-thick. It is made of 18 karat red gold and features hand-applied engraving along the sides and lugs. The rolled-edge dark green alligator strap of the watch nicely matches the tropical theme. The watch is powered by the new Jaquet Droz RMA89 mechanical movement. It beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and has around 86 hours of power reserve. Only 8 pieces of the Jaquet Droz Tropical Bird Repeater watch will be made and it’s priced at $661,500 each.
