Apple to Replace Pistol Emoji With Water Gun for iOS 10 Update
Apple is unveiling more than 100 new emojis — featuring gender diverse characters — with the launch of iOS 10 this fall, the software giant announced on Monday, August 1. They're also replacing the controversial pistol emoji with a neon green water gun.
Among the new emojis include a female surfer, female weight lifter, female swimmer and basketball player. There’s also a new rainbow flag.
“More than one hundred new and redesigned emoji characters will be available to iPhone and iPad users this fall with iOS 10,” Apple said in a statement on Monday. “This exciting update brings more gender options to existing characters, including new female athletes and professionals, adds beautiful redesigns of popular emoji, a new rainbow flag and more family options. Apple is working closely with the Unicode Consortium to ensure that popular emoji characters reflect the diversity of people everywhere.”
The new set of emojis come after the October 2015 release of the iOS 9.1 set. Last fall, 150 new emojis were released, including the much desired taco and middle finger.
A box of popcorn, a bottle of champagne, a turkey, unicorn, dove, crab, beach umbrella, a burrito, cheese and a hot red pepper were among the other emojis most recently released.
There’s still no word, however, on the requested avocado or bacon emojis. In June, Emojipedia reported that the avocado and bacon emojis were available, but it’s unclear when Apple will release them.
