MOVIE REVIEW: "In Time" 2011, What is Darwinian Capitalism?
I heard about how good this movie is by word of mouth. I knew Justin Timberlake is a great actor, especially after seeing him in "Alpha Dog" 2006 and "The Social Network" 2010. However, I didn't think much of this movie after seeing the preview. So in heeding to the approval of my peers, I surveyed the film.
I must say, I underestimated the concept after seeing the preview. It starts out pretty raw. Set in a parallel, modernized, industrial world; with a classic, regal 50's style. Sort of like a futuristic Cuba. lmaooooo
The tone of the film starts out drab and depressing, leaving the audience to fill in the blanks as to what does it all mean. Halfway into it, the pieces of the puzzle begin to come together. That's when you begin to pick up on the concept of what the film is saying and where it's actually going. Towards the end, it got intense, but the intensity became overkill and made you lose track of the story, but it still makes sense in the end.
The strong point of the film was it's concept as I've previously mentioned. We tend to take the phrase "Time is Money" soooooo for granted. But this film takes it literally, whereas time is the currency in the world the characters were living in. The wealth, ofcourse, was distributed unevenly across the economy. And in the low income areas, ofcourse, it was ridden with scarcity, crime, and death; where prices on daily necessities constantly rose as wages were at a constant stagnate. The wealthy areas, ofcourse, are blocked off from "the common folk" and if you were to travel & lodge in such, it would cost you an arm and a leg, OFCOURSE. And what made it so bad, the society was designed this way (Darwinian Capitalism). Ain't that a bitch!
What tripped me out was not a single paper dollar or metal coin was seen in the film WHATSOEVER! The thought of dropping dead ON THE SPOT simply because you ran out of time...REALLY? #CMONSON Then that segways into the philosophical concept of time and timing. No need to digress.
The concept hit me so hard because time truly is money, when you think about it. What value does money have when you have all the time in the world. The only reason we hustle and bustle to make money is because WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!!!
...but let's get into the actor's performances, shall we?

...but let's get into the actor's performances, shall we?
- Justin Timberlake - we don't need to go into his resume. He held is own this film and got deep into his role. The story really made you feel for his character. Blue collar guy, down on his luck, looking for a way out. Then he gets his back against the wall with nothing to lose and a twist of fate makes him a reluctant hero. He's actually a pretty good action actor too.
- Amanda Seyfried "Mama Mia" 2008 - her supporting role played the devil's advocate to Justin Timberlake's character, as her pomp disposition of wealth and nepotism gets rear ended by Justin's plight for vengeance and economic justice. Oddly, her best scenes were those of distress and anxiety.
- Cillian Murphy "Dark Knight" 2008 - In his usual stoic performance, befitting that of a cruel and callous villian. His character played the nemesis to Justin's character, as his quest to serve "justice" and "make what's wrong right in the world" would soon be foiled as he is encountered with a mystery of wealth changing into the "wrong hands" (Justin's character, that is). His performance maintained that sophisticated demeanor he's known for, yet I didn't get that sense of villainous intimidation that his role needed.
Go see it. You'll only need to see it once, but you'll mull over the concept in your mind again, and again, and again...like I did.
